Sound Formats

WAVE (.wav) - Format native to Windows. WAVE is not "real-time" and each 30-second clip will require 4-5 minuted download time through a 28.8k modem. The sound quality is comparable to an FM radio station heard through mono speakers. Sounds in .wav format are the most prevalent on IRC Internet Chat and also used on web sites. Great for sound effects and sound bites.

MIDI is a acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, a standard method for electronic musical equipment to pass messages to each other. MP3. This lets you take a CD quality sound file and compress it into a couple of MB. This is a great way to distribute music on the net.
Instead of sending sounds, MIDI files activate local music synthesizer programs on your computer. Widely used by musicians, MIDI is supported by recent versions of Apple's QuickTime (2.5 and higher) through a "virtual synthesizer" of electronic instruments. This file format is also widely used in web sites.

MP3 - an audio compression format that are CD-quality (stereo,44khz,16bit). A good ratio is: 1 minute = 1 MB. Therefore, instead of a WAV file that is 50MBs (at CD quality, 16bit,stereo,44khz), you have a MP3 file that is 4MBs, which makes it realistically downloadable. file extension is .wav

RealAudio (.ra/.ram) - RealAudio is a streaming "real-time" format that starts to play in a few seconds after selection. In contrast, other formats require several minutes of download time before the audio can play. RealAudio runs on Mac, Windows and UNIX systems. If you don't have a RealAudio player yet, you can get free from the Real Networks site.

AIFF (.aiff) - Format native to Macintosh, and used extensively in the audio industry. AIFF is not "real-time" and each 30-second clip will require about 4-5 minutes to download through a 28.8k modem.
